Listen now to the Dr. Future Show 11.26.13

Happy Holidays to you!  The big question this week is should we install a state-of-the art HD webcam on top our KSCO towers, so that we may share the beauty of our Monterey Bay with the rest of the world. After today’s show, the answer is an absolute yes!  One caller even wanted us to install two cams, so we could broadcast in 3-D!

The emergency in the Phillipines, caused by the largest storm in history, certainly got our attention this week. We’d thought we pass on the some links that would help, should you have relatives or friends embroiled in this disaster.

As 3D printing matures, more and more complex things are being made, including object of metal, such as hand guns. We have an update (and an info-laden phone call) on this topic.

We also hear from John Draper (aka Captain Crunch) on the Hombrew Computer Club reunion at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View this week.  It sounded like quite the gala geek event!

Interview with Gary Winnick, Animator and Graphic Novelist

Listen to Gary Winnick Interview Now

This week we chat with Gary Winnick, an indy Santa Cruz-based visual artist, about his days at Lucasfilm Games.   He shares some fascinating stories from Skywalker Ranch involving George Lucas and Stephen Spielberg from the early days of computer graphics and animation, as the first real artist to be hired by the studio, to work alongside the computer genius geeks inventing these new art forms.

We also delve into his latest project, an illustrated graphic novel series called, “Bad Dreams,”  chronicling the adventures of an odd group of dreamworld characters.  As an independent artist, Gary is exploring Kickstarter crowd-sourcing as a means of financing this creative endeavor, and we discuss this approach for indy artists in our interview with him.

Do It Yourself Biology - The Next Frontier in Human Evolution?

As the tools for exploring and manipulating biological genetic material becoming faster, better, and cheaper, we find the desire to play with biology is increasingly fascinating.  Much like the personal computer revolution of the 1970’s and 80’s,  power and capability  that had previously been only in the domain of the scientific priesthood was now available to anyone with an interest in the topic.
For this show we speak with two researchers in the world of DIY BIO, Ryan Bethencourt and Nina DiPrimio, editors of a new O’Reilly  publication about this burgeoning field, Biocoder. We speak about the promise and dangers of genetic manipulation and what experiments are actually being done now by children, such as creating glowing plants, using genetic circuitry from fireflies.
